Those injured in motor vehicle accidents already know that some people are bad drivers. An important source of evidence pointing to the dangers of negligent driving comes from the well-respected National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Each year, the NTSB releases its “most wanted” list of driving safety improvements. As you might expect, several of these most wanted improvements focus on unsafe driving behaviors.
More than 37,000 people die each year in motor vehicle accidents. Part of the NTSB’s efforts to reduce this number involves letting the public and the government know what needs to be done to decrease vehicle accidents. That is where its most wanted list comes in.
Below are the items centered on driving behaviors:
Speeding: The safety board wants “proven tools” put in place that will help reduce speeding on roadways. Examples include enhanced vehicle technology, infrastructure design and more traffic cameras.
Distractions: In 2017, more than 3,000 traffic deaths involved some form of distraction, according to the last data. The use of electronic devices behind the wheel plays a big role in distracted driving and the NTSB would like to see motorists pay better attention while operating vehicles.
Impairment: This is a top cause of motor vehicle accidents and traffic deaths. The NTSB wants to reduce the accepted blood alcohol level reduced from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent.
Fatigue: The NTSB wants to see the nation adopt a “comprehensive approach” to the problem of driving while fatigued.
Like the rest of the country’s citizens, those living in Ohio suffer greatly from car, truck and motorcycle crashes caused by negligent driving behaviors. Victims can seek a legal remedy to hold negligent motorists responsible for what they do behind the wheel.
